  1. Cat Says:

BARF = Biologically Appropriate Raw Food

So a raw prey model diet would fall into the BARF category. If you’re feeding a BARF diet to a cat, it does NOT include grains or other foods that cats are not designed to digest, as they are obligate carnivores.

Raw prey diet includes… Raw meaty bones, whole carcassess,(ushually mice, and young game birds),and organ meat.

The BARF diet includes: Various varieties of raw meat, raw bone, raw veggies, raw fruits, honey, apple cider vinager, yogurt,!!AND SOMETIMES EVEN GRAIN!!. Manufacturers who commomly make this include Nature’s Variety,Primal, and Iam Billinghurst.

I personally think people who feed BARF are ushually newbies who do not trust the nutrition of prey model.

Yes BARF is raw, the acronym stands for Bones And Raw Food or Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. Any well balanced raw diet is much healthier than commercial foods, but Prey Model aka a Natural Raw Diet (NRD) is superior to BARF in that it is more natural. A wild carnivore isn’t going to run its prey through a meat grinder and add veggie mush and various other things to it before consuming it; it is just simply going to eat it.

Your dog/cat/ferret has a perfectly capable meat grinder built in – a mouth full of carnassial teeth.

The veggie mush part of the BARF diet is based off of the false idea that wolves eat the stomach contents of their prey. It has been documented by wolf expert David Mech that wolves almost never eat the stomach contents unless they are desparate or they consume a small animal whole. They do eat the stomach, but shake the contents out first.

Another issues w/ BARF is that you throw the nutritional values of the food way off when you start adding vitamins, etc.

Also, since BARF is mostly ground (most BARF ppl do feed a rmb for one of the meals), the teeth don’t get cleaned as much. And, the act of chewing preps the carnivore’s stomach for digestion.
